Deployment models: public, private, hybrid and community cloud
10 practice questions · in the MTE and ETE syllabus
Key points
- Four models: public, private, community, hybrid
- Private cloud gives control, public gives scale and low cost
- Hybrid links separate clouds through portable technology
- Cloud bursting sends overflow to a public cloud
NIST defines four deployment models.
- Public cloud: owned by a provider and available to the general public over the Internet (AWS, Azure, GCP). Lowest cost, highest elasticity, least control.
- Private cloud: operated for a single organisation, on or off its premises. Most control over data, security and compliance, but higher cost and less elasticity.
- Community cloud: shared by several organisations with common concerns such as regulations or mission, for example a group of universities or hospitals.
- Hybrid cloud: a composition of two or more of the above that remain distinct entities but are bound by standard technology enabling data and application portability.
Cloud bursting is a hybrid technique where overflow demand from a private cloud is sent to a public cloud during peaks.
Example: a bank keeps customer records on a private cloud and hosts its marketing site on a public cloud.
Exam trap: hybrid does not merge the clouds; each part stays separate but connected.
Try two questions
A retailer keeps customer data on its private cloud but uses a public cloud for seasonal traffic. Which model is this?
- Pure public cloud
- Pure private cloud
- Hybrid cloud
- Community cloud
Show the answer
C. Combining a private cloud for sensitive data with a public cloud for peaks is the hybrid model.
Why not A: Customer data stays private, so it is not purely public.
Why not B: A public cloud is also used, so it is not purely private.
Why not D: No group of organisations with shared concerns is described.
Which model is shared by several organisations with common concerns, such as the same regulations?
- Public cloud for any customer
- Community cloud
- Private cloud for a single firm
- Personal cloud for a single user
Show the answer
B. A community cloud serves a specific group of organisations with shared requirements.
Why not A: A public cloud is not limited to a group with shared concerns.
Why not C: A private cloud serves a single organisation.
Why not D: A personal cloud is not a standard NIST deployment model.
