Blood relation: jumbled descriptions, relation puzzles and coded relations
30 practice questions · in the MTE and ETE syllabus
Key points
- Draw a tree and track gender
- Uncle or aunt belongs to the parent's generation
- Cousin shares grandparents
- Do not assume a gender the statement does not give
Read the chain one link at a time and keep a small family tree with each person's gender.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Uncle, aunt | a parent's brother, sister |
| Nephew, niece | a sibling's son, daughter |
| Cousin | child of a parent's sibling |
| Grandfather, grandmother | a parent's father, mother |
| Brother-in-law, sister-in-law | spouse's sibling, or sibling's spouse |
Generation steps: moving to a parent goes up one level, moving to a child goes down one, a sibling stays on the same level. Compare the levels of the two people and the shared ancestor to name the relation.
When a person is described as "the only son of my father", that person is the speaker. "A is the brother of B" gives A as male but leaves B's gender unknown.
Example: Pooja is the sister of Tarun, Divya is the daughter of Pooja, and Kabir is the brother of Divya. Kabir is Tarun's nephew.
Exam trap: assuming a gender for a person the statement leaves unspecified.
