Meaning and components of attitude, positive versus negative attitude
10 practice questions · in the MTE and ETE syllabus
Key points
- Attitude is a learned, relatively stable evaluation
- ABC stands for affective, behavioural, cognitive
- Positive attitude looks for solutions
- Components can be inconsistent with each other
An attitude is a relatively stable way of thinking and feeling about people, objects or situations, and it influences behaviour. Attitudes are learned, so they can be changed.
The ABC model lists three components:
| Component | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Affective | feelings and emotions | I dislike presentations |
| Behavioural | tendency to act | I avoid giving talks |
| Cognitive | beliefs and thoughts | I believe speaking is risky |
A positive attitude looks for solutions, opportunities and learning, shows helpfulness and composure under pressure, and builds trust. A negative attitude focuses on problems and blame, resists change and weakens teamwork.
Attitude acts as a lens: two people given the same task can react differently because they interpret it differently.
Exam trap: the three components can disagree, for example someone who believes exercise is good and enjoys it but rarely does it.
Try two questions
