Fixed versus growth mindset and developing a growth mindset
10 practice questions · in the MTE and ETE syllabus
Key points
- Fixed mindset sees ability as unchangeable
- Growth mindset sees ability as developable
- Say yet and praise effort to build growth
- Mindsets can change and can differ by area
Psychologist Carol Dweck described two mindsets. A fixed mindset treats intelligence and talent as unchangeable, so people avoid challenges, give up easily, see effort as pointless and ignore criticism. A growth mindset treats abilities as developable through effort, strategy and feedback, so people embrace challenges, persist, learn from criticism and find inspiration in others' success.
| Situation | Fixed | Growth |
|---|---|---|
| Failed exam | I am just not good at this | I will study differently next time |
| Hard task | Avoid it | Take it as a chance to learn |
| Feedback | Defend or ignore | Ask for examples and act |
To develop a growth mindset: add the word yet (I cannot do this yet), praise effort and strategy rather than talent, seek feedback, set learning goals and treat setbacks as information.
Exam trap: mindsets are not permanent traits; a person can hold different mindsets in different areas and can change them.
